The Appointment

Amai Proteins, the Israeli food-tech company commercialising a precision-fermented sweet protein, has named Doug Brown as chief executive officer, effective September 1, 2026. Brown succeeds Dr. Amir Guttman, who guided the company through a period of strategic refocus and transitions to an executive board seat.

Brown is a U.S. national with decades of business development and senior leadership experience spanning the food, beverage, and dietary supplement segments. Most recently he served as Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Global Account Management at Sirio Pharma and Best Formulations. Prior roles include CCO at Clasado Biosciences in the United Kingdom and Head of Business Development for Nutritional Lipids at DSM Nutritional Products in Switzerland — a resume that spans both lean-scale startup environments and large multinational ingredient platforms.

The Product Behind the Hire

The appointment is tightly linked to the commercial trajectory of sweelin®, Amai's lead ingredient. A monellin-based sweet protein derived from the serendipity berry, sweelin® is on average 3,000 times sweeter than sugar on a weight basis. It is produced via precision fermentation and engineered for stability and compatibility with industrial food processing — characteristics that matter to large-scale manufacturers evaluating alternatives to high-intensity synthetic sweeteners.

Amai positions sweelin® as capable of enabling up to 70% sugar reduction across food and beverage, confectionery, chewing gum, condiments, and dietary supplements without sacrificing taste, cost competitiveness, or sustainability credentials. Those claims place it squarely in one of the food industry's most contested reformulation categories, where brands are under mounting retail and regulatory pressure to cut added sugar.

Market Timing and GLP-1 Tailwinds

"sweelin® is a perfect product at the right time for the GLP-1/peptide era," Brown said in a statement, flagging the growing consumer and clinical interest in appetite-regulating therapies as a demand driver for lower-sugar formulations. The GLP-1 drug cohort has reshaped conversations across better-for-you food and beverage categories, pushing ingredient suppliers to demonstrate how their offerings align with the dietary patterns of patients on those medications.

The sweet protein segment more broadly is attracting investment as food manufacturers search for clean-label alternatives to aspartame, sucralose, and stevia — each of which carries residual consumer perception challenges. Precision fermentation, the production method behind sweelin®, has gained credibility as a scalable pathway for novel proteins, with several ingredient startups now advancing through regulatory review in major markets. For Amai, converting that credibility into commercial supply agreements will be Brown's primary mandate. His background in global ingredient business development and key account management makes him a functional fit for that task, which involves navigating procurement cycles at multinational food and supplement manufacturers rather than consumer-facing marketing.
